We've all heard the phrase: "Live life to the fullest!" Practically every graduation speech I've ever sat through was based around this concept. But does anyone truly know what it means? It seems like the sentence is thrown around like "I love you," so meaningless most of the time. "Live life to the fullest" is not advice. It's amazing how so many people use it as just that.
It's too abstract to be actual advice. How does anyone know the capacity of life, much less how to make it full. Does it mean party while you can? If that's so, where's your future going to take you? Have you ever seen party animals as they grow up? They normally either become junkies who are miserable and half of the time kill themselves or get murdured, or they regret what they did in their past (and regret is no way to live a fulfilling life). So partying and having "fun" all of the time can't be living life to the fullest.
On the opposing side, working your entire life is also not very fulfilling. I know, I pretty much do just that. I am trying to carve myself a successful future, maybe get all the hard work out of the way early and have fun when I have more time in the future, when what I have worked so hard for finally arrives. I'm not the only one with this mind state. But it is by no means perfect. What if your time never comes? What if you waste your life away, working for a future that doesn't seem to get any closer. You work and work and work, but you find your future gives none of the down time that you had anticipated. Or if you do make it, and you are successful, and you have the time to do whatever you want, but you are too old, or you no longer have access to what you want because of aging. Or worse yet, what if you die before reaching that future?
You never know when you're going to die. Even if you try to commit suicide, it's never 100%. There is still a chance you will survive, just as much a chance that you would die no matter how healthy and cautious you are. You never know. But you can't live every day like it's going to be your last, because that may as well be what makes it your last. You can't do everything that makes you happy, because you might get an aneurism from too much pot or liver disease from too much alcohol. So what does it mean to "live life to the fullest"?
People throw that phrase around and don't even know what it means. I still can't figure out what it means. It's harder to do than it sounds. You try. Present me with what you come up with. More than likely, I'll be able to validly oppose it. If I can't, then well you deserve my thanks and gratitude for enlightening me.
Don't worry about "living life to the fullest," because by trying to do so you will never know when enough is enough. Rather, know that you could die tomorrow, or this afternoon, or in the next ten seconds. Think about your life thusfar. Think about your relationships. Have you done what you wanted? Are you in a place that you want to be? Have you said what you wanted to say to whom you wanted to say it? Try to think if you have any business that would go unfinished if you were to die tomorrow. If you love someone, tell them. If you regret something, apologize and seek forgiveness. If someone seeks forgiveness from you, forgive them. Don't leave the world with something to say...say it. Before it's too late. Because you just never know...
