One of the most touchy issues in the world today so happens to be homosexuality. It's considered an "invisible minority", as you can't as easily distinguish someone as homosexual (referring to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transexual alike) as you can a black person, a white person, an asian, etc. Many people believe, mainly due to religious affiliation, that it is morally wrong to carry out homosexual acts or have homosexual tendencies. Many other believe that it is wrong to even think homosexual thoughts, and again many carry out hateful acts to discriminate against what they don't understand, and thusly don't accept. Personally, I couldn't care less about who you'd rather be with. That's your perogative (is that how you spell it?).
I am not writing to explain my moral standpoint on the subject. I am not "coming out of the closet"...I'm not in the closet to begin with. Yes, mom, I am straight (yes, she really asked me if I was gay...that's another story). Morality, afterall, is something that we all have that is unique to us. What I consider moral and just (obviously) is not necessarily what anyone else may consider right at all. What I am writing about, however, is a response to the ever-popular question: Is homosexuality genetic or a product of being raised that way?
Well, if you ask me, it is genetic. Now I'm sure that many people in one's lives can be quite influential, especially on such a touchy topic as this. However, it is to my belief that you can not make anyone gay that doesn't already have gay tendencies or a homosexual mindset. I have reasons, too. I was in my psychology class, talking about social Darwinism and evolution and selective breeding etc. when it hit me. You see, men like particular features in women by instinct (and vice versa). Certain features give off the impression of high estrogen, thus high fertility in women. Our natural drive as a living species is to procreate, and we are instinctively attracted to mates with high fertility. For instance, full lips and a small chin on women tells males that they are high in estrogen and very fertile. Go figure that those (along with other) features are what most men look for in our definition of femanine beauty. So, the "hot chicks" we wanna "fuck" are only hot due to our instincts telling us we can easily continue our bloodline with them. Are you following so far?
This is where the natural selection comes into play. You see, we mate to continue our bloodline, well males due at least. I'm beginning to believe that females mate to be accepted as part of the community...like it's their main role in the society. Anyway, if a certain trait is not supposed to evolve with the rest of the species, the trait will be depleted through the process of natural selection. That is, your chances of successfully passing a recessive trait to the next generation through reproduction are lessened, and eventually the trait is lost forever as we evolve as a species.
Now homosexuality: Face it, it's impossible for homosexuals to reproduce (unless they have heterosexual experiences). Therefore, it's my belief that homosexuality is evolutions way of population control and another form of natural selection. I think some people have traits the mother nature would rather not have exist within her realm, so she gives carriers of these traits another trait of homosexuality. That way, they are less likely to mate with a heterosexual partner and produce offspring, thus increasing the chances that the trait will cease to exist in future generations.
I know, it's probably far-fetched. But it's something I thought makes a lot of sense in a Darwinistic manner. Disagree for all I care. I'm not entirely sure if I completely agree with myself on this anyway. I'm not gay...I wouldn't know what it's like for a gay person. But this is my attempt to explain the phenomenon to the best of my ability, knowledge, and theory. As I look deeper into it, I may (or may not) find a better answer...
